Euskal Herria

Each time I visit the Basque Country, I have a great time there. I am not sure exactly why, but I like it even more than Spain.

Places are magically beautiful, like Donostia.

And the food, oh!, the food is one of the best in the world.

People there are a bit grumpy, but somewhat I like that. Maybe “I'm a perv”, as a dear friend reminds me often.

Sometimes I think it would be great living in Euskadi an extended period. But, realistically, that's unlikely.

First, it is not cheap. Donostia and Bilbo are probably the 3rd and the 4th most expensive cities in the Iberian Peninsula, only after Madrid and Barcelona.

But even if I could afford it, it is a very closed society. It is almost impossible to develop some feeling of belonging there—something I need in the long term.

Friendships there are forged during Pre School years (4–6 years old) and it is almost impossible to join ever after. Besides, to be considered from there you not only need to speak Euskera, but also have at least two or three generations up in your family tree belonging to those lands (there is a comedy that explains this last point, English subtitles are not surprisingly accurate though).

Any way.

I don't know what life will bring in the future. But I hope I have the opportunity to visit Euskadi many times in the future.
